Southern California skiing has one persistent problem: the drive. Big Bear is a long haul from Los Angeles on a Friday night, and staying in the resort towns is expensive. Crestline sits lower down the same mountain range — closer to the city, quieter, and still within easy reach of the slopes.

Times assume clear roads. Add a buffer on Saturday mornings in January, when everyone in the basin has the same idea.
The winter-specific things that actually matter
A garage, not just a driveway
This is the amenity people underrate until they've done a ski weekend without one. You unload boots and boards out of the snow, and your car isn't buried or iced over at 7am when you're trying to make first lifts.
A real wood-burning fireplace
Not a gas insert. It's the centre of the living room and the reason nobody moves after four in the afternoon.
Central heat throughout
The cabin is insulated and heated properly. Mountain rentals vary enormously on this and a cold cabin ruins a trip faster than bad snow.
A game room for the storm day
Some winter weekends the mountain highways close, or the wind shuts the lifts. The top-floor game room — arcade cabinet, pool table, ping pong, air hockey — is what turns that from a ruined trip into a good one. There's more on it on the game room page.
Chains, roads and being realistic
Worth saying plainly, because winter in these mountains catches people out.
Carry chains between roughly November and March. Caltrans sets chain requirements on CA-18 and CA-138 based on conditions, and they can be imposed with little warning mid-storm. Four-wheel drive with snow-rated tyres often satisfies the requirement, but not in every restriction level.
Check road conditions before you leave. Caltrans publishes live highway conditions. Ten minutes of checking beats two hours parked at a closure.
Snow in Crestline is real but variable. At 4,600 feet the town gets genuine snowfall most winters, though it can melt between storms. Snow Valley sits higher and makes snow, so the slopes are usually more dependable than the view out of the window.
If the roads close: mountain highways do shut during major storms. Cancellation terms depend on the platform you booked through — message us if a storm is forecast for your dates and we'll be as reasonable as we can. We'd rather move a booking than have someone attempt a closed highway.
Winter without skiing
Plenty of guests come up in winter and never touch a lift. Snow play areas are dotted around the local mountains for sledding. The Lake Gregory path is quieter and starkly good-looking in cold weather. And Lake Arrowhead village, 20 minutes along the ridge, is an easy afternoon.
Then back to the fireplace. That's the actual itinerary most winter weekends.

Three bedrooms sleeping eight — king master suite, queen bedroom, and a bunk room for four. Two and a half bathrooms, full kitchen, washer and dryer for wet gear, air conditioning and central heat, two decks, and the game room upstairs. Dogs are welcome; there's a separate page on the pet policy.

Common questions
How far is Snow Valley exactly?
About 20 minutes east along CA-18 in normal conditions. It's the closest resort and a genuine day-trip distance.
Do I need chains?
Carry them November through March. Whether you'll need to fit them depends on the restriction level in force that day, which Caltrans sets. Don't drive up in winter without them in the boot.
Is there somewhere to dry ski gear?
Yes — washer and dryer in the cabin, plus the garage for boots and boards.
Will there be snow on my dates?
Nobody can promise that, and anyone who does is guessing. Crestline gets real snow most winters but amounts vary. Snow Valley makes snow, so the slopes are more reliable than the town.
Is it warm enough inside?
Central heat throughout plus the wood-burning fireplace. The cabin was renovated recently and holds heat well.
